ABENAKI MUSEUM
Abenaki Inspired Indian Museum To Open In East Montpelier Vermont
The East Montpelier Sugarhouse has been open for only a couple of months. For those who have not taken the drive to East Montpelier you may not realize the passion behind this Abenaki Indian gift shop. The shop is driven by the owner’s passion for his Abenaki heritage. Inside you will find many Vermont made Indian items as well as other Indian items from all over the country. You will also learn about the Abenaki heritage and one families struggle through the dark years of living in Vermont and having to hide your identity of being Indian.
It is this same passion that drives the opening of an Indian museum in A space currently occupied by a Tire and Accessories store at the same location. Beginning in January of 2008 the work will begin to remodel the space and build the museum. The remodeling phase is the easy part. Finding items for the museum is the task that is going to be difficult. With the hiding in plain site that had to take place in the last 200 years many of these items have been lost. However there are items still out there. The owner Todd Hebert is putting out a call for help.. “We need people that want to place items they may have that were handed down on display” Hebert says. “ We are not looking for donations, if you bring your items here they will always belong to you. In other words you can take them at any time”. Volunteers are also needed to help build the museum. “ We plan to be open by the end of March, so time is of the essence” says Hebert. Anyone interested in being part of this either by displaying items or by volunteering can contact Todd Hebert “Red Fox” at 802-224-1055 or by visiting the website http://www.maplesugarhouse.net.
I tentatively have plans to take part in future genealogy sessions that Todd "Red Fox" Hebert will be sponsoring at his new Museum. We hope you can loan any Native American display items to help support this great project. Future programs will be posted here as they develope.
